How to do Market Research for an E-commerce Website
Market research is the most important step in starting your business and has several steps in itself. There are a TON of ways to go about doing market research so I’ll just go through a quick process using some free tools. This will help determine whether or not people are buying and if there’s enough room (competition wise) for you to make some money in the next month of two.
If you skimp on market research then your profits will skimp on you buster so don’t even think about skipping this step
There are three steps you need to take to discover good niches to build an E-commerce business in.
1. Find and choose a supplier in a niche of your choice 2. Research Key words and phrases using a keyword tool. 3. Research the Competition (using a search engine)
Find a supplier in your niche
A niche is a narrow topic within a broader category. For example, nail polish is a niche of Health and Beauty, wireless mouses is a niche of Computers, and whole wheat cereal is a niche of food or cereal. Were not trying to become the next Walmart so we need to keep out niche small and focuses. Can you think of any small focused niches?
I always use www.wholesalecentral.com to find a supplier. Navigation is easy because they list all their categories on the front page. Choose a category your interested in and find a supplier for your niche. Once you’ve done that we’ll take that niche and do some research with the keyword tool.

I found a company that supplies scrapbooking supplies. my next step is to do some keyword research in that niche to see if its going to be profitable or not and if theres little enough competition for me to jump in the game. We’re looking for 1000-100,000 searches per month for our initial keyword.
the term scrapbooking brings in about 16,000 searches per month according to the keyword tool. this is great because it means that 16,000 different people a month are actively searching for this niche. A quick look at the competing pages in Googles search engine however shows us that there is about 36 million websites trying to get ranked well for that term. were looking for 5 million or less so we can rank higher faster, thereby making more money. the keyword tool suggested I also try, scrapbooking ideas. This term has 1040 searches per month which still is not bad at all so lets go see how the competition is for this phrase.
Awesome! Google shows only 455,000 competing pages for the phrase, scrapbooking ideas. This has some great potential for building a profitable E-commerce site around selling scrapbooking ebooks, materials and how to videos.
Remember the parameters: 1000-100,000 searches per month and less than 5 million competing pages.
Now go to it! Find 3-10 niches that fit the parameters and start contacting your suppliers to discuss your business plans.
