Fundamentals Of SEO

February 19th, 2010 Carey Lim No comments

Hundreds of thousands of results will be displayed on searching for a well known keyword on any search engine. In such a scenario, how a website manages to feature among the top results of a query for a specific keyword is called Search Engine Optimization or SEO. Finding a place within the top results on related and important searches increases the number of people who are directed to your website and hence you do more business. That is the reason why SEO has become so important.

Black hat and white hat are the two primary classifications of SEO techniques. The tools used in black hat SEO to push the website in the top results are not seen as fair practices. In contrast, white hat SEO abides by all the principles prescribed by the search engines and concentrates on the techniques which are commonly approved of.

To connect a specific web page to a particular keyword, the search engines in the past used the Meta data of the page that has been made a part of the code of that page. However, major search engines now make use of complex algorithms to show the results that are filtered on the basis of more than 200 varied factors.

SEO specialists try to figure out the significance of many elements in the search algorithms and keep in touch with the latest modifications that are introduced by different search engines. On the basis of these findings, they improve the SEO methods used by their clients so that their websites stay competitive. When the search results were only reliant on Meta data and the content of the web page, this job involved optimizing the Meta tags of the web pages and making sure that the keyword density of each page was just right.

Although these factors are critical even today, the popularity of the web page is now more significant for the search engines. The popularity of a web page is judged based on the number of links to it from other web pages. Each link is thus taken as a vote for the page and the algorithm becomes democratic in nature. Therefore, SEO nowadays needs strategic work outside the site such as giving away free content in exchange of links to the site and establishing a presence on blogs and other social mediums online.

You must always keep in mind that SEO is a continuous and dynamic process. This field keeps changing and your techniques must be up to date with the changes. This is what makes using the services of a professional SEO consultant so vital.

Google Changes Send Affiliates Scrambling

February 3rd, 2010 Eric Haaranen No comments

If you’re familiar with pay per click as a method of generating traffic to your website you probably already know that Adwords is really the only game in town. That is if you want traffic fast and in volume. You are also aware then, that Adwords is a massive nuisance to set up properly. This is because Google insists that you play by their rules but rarely make these rules available to their advertisers.

Google also has a bit of a history for changing the rules of the game without any heads-up to their advertisers. This is often called the Google Slap. Back in the day you could just build a simple lead capture page and drive traffic to it using Adwords. Not anymore. Now Google wants to see some significant content on those sites so those site provide “value” to their visitors. This makes things especially tough for affiliate marketers.

Not too long ago, Google moistened its palm and gave a good whack to affiliates once again. This time the unfortunate targets seemed to be review-type sites where the owner or the visitors to the site review and discuss products and services within a particular market. The site contains affiliate links and if anyone happens to click through those links and make a purchase, the owner of the site gets paid a referral commission.

In any event, it seems that this week Google has changed their algorythms again and this time they are looking for Adwords advertisers that are driving traffic to these affiliate review pages or any type of landing page obviously promoting affiliate products. It seems a strange tactic by Google considering that affiliate marketing is such a huge part of online marketing and also that Google itself runs its own affiliate network.

However, it has happened and we must move forward. The question now is what can we, as affiliates do about this new terrain?

I can’t speak for everyone but what I’m doing seems to be working very well. You can see for yourself by clicking the link below.

Getting The Full SEO Benefits From A Blog

January 13th, 2010 David Anttony No comments

WordPress is one of the world’s major and most widely used blogging software system. When it comes to SEO it is one of the best platforms that you can use.

This is part of a series of tip articles just about using WordPress for maximizing on Search Engine Optimization.

Tip: Make sure the blog is on YOUR site

We are often asked

If you are using your blog to enhance your SEO then you HAVE to place your blog on your web site – it cannot live on on a different website.

Do not even think about using a sub-web such as http://www.blog.myhotsite.com. Why would you use a sub web anyhow unless if you want a cool blog URL.

Sub webs are part of your web site but they are unclear from an SEO perspective. If you want to have the blog content 100% linked up with your website then make sure it is off a sub folder and NOT a sub web for example : http://www.myhappysite.com/blog.

Placing your blog on a sub web will not give you the same SEO advantage as having them as a sub-folder on your website. Sub webs may be treated different by different search engines – the result outcome will be unclear.

If your blog is presently hosted on blogger.com or wordpress.com then you should think about to move it as soon as manageable if you want to enhance your SEO position.

If you have some existing rankings for keywords on Google and Yahoo then you do need to be warned – adding a lot of new content may affect your ranking negativily at first.

We have experienced client ranking drop after adding a lot of new content in the form of a blog to a clients sites. Adding a blast of new content ‘dilutes’ your current site content if the new content is NOT Search Engine Optimization optimized for the keywords that you want to rank for. SEO Optimize the content before making it live to avoid this dilution effect. Taking the time to do this BEFORE you add it to your site will make a big difference to your existing ranking position.

One Stop Seo Tip

January 13th, 2010 David Anttony No comments

There are two types of SEO, onsite and offsite. Onsite involves optimizing your website to make it search engine friendly. By changing your local site and adding special SEO components you can attract better results, and sometimes great results from search engines like Google.

You can get very good results with just onsite optimisation on its own but the results tend to be unstable and not effective continuing. To get top results you will need to do a lot off offsite optimization as well.

Top onsite SEO tip: change the page title

Believe it or not the changing the page title is one of the most important onsite optimization techniques you can do. The page title is what appears at the top of a browser on the left hand side. Visitors to your web site will not commonly take much notice of your page title because it is not shown on your page. However, search engines take a lot of notice of the page title.

If you do not know what the page title looks like in the HTML just open up any page in web browser and look at the page source (right click the page and select view source).

You will find the page title within the <title?</title? tags usually within the first few lines of the HTML code. This is an instance of an HTML title tag : <title? This is my page title</title?.

Search engines take a lot of notice of the page title because it is like the title of a book, it tells you what the book is about. If the title is clear and succinct it tells search engines exactly what the page is about then you can rank high for some of your preferred keywords.

The trick is to make the page title 100% of your keyword or as close to that as manageable. The more extra words, other than your keyword(s), that you have, will reduce the strength. Focus is everything in the world of SEO.

For example, avoid doing this: <title?Earth Worms in the Middle East</title? when your keyword is earth worms. Instead simply use: <title?Earth Worms</title?.

If you have multiple keywords only use 2 or 3 maximum or again the focus is diluted. If you are using multiple keywords then do it like this: <title?Earth worms | Middle East</title? – never use filler words like ‘in’ and ‘the’.

In addition, as this technique specifically aims at prospective clients who are online, they usually end up buying your product or service online as well, which is a lot more efficient and inexpensive method of making a sale compared to selling at a retail store.

It is often found that the response rate from prospective customers is a lot better in SEO as compared to other methods. This is because SEO attracts potential customers who were in fact searching for a keyword related to your website, which means that a lot of of them would be already interested in your offering. This will give you a good idea about what potential customers want, and will enable you to position your goods and services accordingly or change your SEO methods to adapt to the requirements.

What Are The Greatest Tips To Increase Your Seo Rankings?

December 25th, 2009 Susan Reynolds No comments

Any webmaster knows that search engine optimization is essential for the success of a website. Millions of companies present their products and services on the Internet, which makes SEO even more important. However, not all of them use the most appropriate techniques to promote their online business. Here are the best tips to increase your SEO Rankings:

The most important is to make everything possible to get more traffic to your website. More traffic means more visitors. Let’s suppose that your website is about makeup products. If it is well optimized, it will appear on the first pages in search engines when someone searches for a keyword related to makeup products.

Keywords are basically words that search engine spiders (a program that scans web sites and sends information back to search engines) use to determine the relevance of a website. Try to find the most appropriate keywords for your website. For example, if your site is about weight loss, use the words ‘weight loss diet’, ‘weight loss pills’, ‘how to lose weight’, etc.

If you look in the upper left of your web browser, you will see a text that displays the Web page you’re visiting and in some cases, a brief description of the website. This text is known as a web page title. The title is one of the first things that a search engine spider ’sees’ when scanning a website. This is why you must choose relevant titles for your articles and posts.

There are some things you are not allowed to do if you want your website to be indexed by search engines. Don’t use white text on white background, don’t hide the text behind images and don’t set the font size to 0. Those who don’t follow these rules are penalized by Google.

Every page on your site should link to at least one other page. This will increase your website popularity. However, don’t exchange links with everyone, because some websites might work against you. Only exchange links with websites your visitors will find relevant. It doesn’t make sense to link to a fashion blog if your website is about politics.

Some people use link exchange schemes to manipulate Page Rank. Others link to malicious sites on the Web. Instead of breaking the rules using these strategies, try to write unique content. This is the best way to make your website visitors trust you and increase your SEO rankings.

The Internet is a unbelievably competitive market. Companies are competing to draw the attention of millions of Internet users, and the battle takes places in search engines. We’ve got practical Search Engine Optimization tips to increase your SEO Rankings and get more traffic to your site!

Forget About All But The Description Meta Tag

December 22nd, 2009 David Anttony No comments

There is only one meta tag that most search engines use – the description tag. It is not usually used for SEO ranking purposes, but it is ordinarily used (including by Google) as the text on the search results listing.

The content of the description tag is used more often than not by Google when it displays the results pages for a keyword. It uses only the first 156 characters though so make sure if you are using it to check the length of the text. If you do not check the length your text will be truncated and it will look funny.

To check the length of a piece of text just paste it into a word document and then select the text and then double click the word count box at the bottom of the screen on the status bar.

All meta tags should be at the start of the page inside the head tags.

Google is a little rogue when it comes to using or not using the meta description tag. When it does use it you can have full control of what is exposed to prospective visitors but it will often vary what it uses at will with sometimes it just plucking a piece of text from your webpage.

If you want to control what Google exhibits then the very first 156 characters of text on a page should be highly controlled because if it does not use the description tag it will use this text.

If you have a flash site or just use pictures with a little text, you have a problem! We have seen Google pick up the alt text from an image and display this when it did not choose to use our description tag. This will tell you to ALWAYS have some text on your page even if it is only 156 carefully selected characters (including spaces).

If it is considered that your site contains hidden links and text, it may be removed from Google index. This means that it won’t appear in search engines.

Your site’s ranking in Google search results is also based on the number of backlinks to your website. Google takes into account the quantity, quality and relevance of these links. However, some webmasters use link exchange schemes and build web pages only to exchange links. This violates Google’s webmaster guidelines and can negatively affect your site ranking in search results.

Examples of schemes of links may include: links created to manipulate Page Rank, links to spammers or malicious sites on the Web and excessive reciprocal links or excessive exchange links (“Create a link to me and I will create a link to you.). A Brief Overview At Professional SEO Services

December 16th, 2009 Francis Teo No comments

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) means deployment of certain ethical techniques, processes and methods with the objective of moving a website to be displayed among the top ranking results when specific phrases or keywords are searched using popular search engines.

You need to use the professional SEO services offered by SEO firms to ensure that your website gets a high ranking in the search results.

Such of those firms that offer professional SEO services always use white hat or ethical techniques for your website optimization in order to boost the ranking of your website when searched by popular search engines. Such SEO firms shy away from black hat or unethical techniques that are not acceptable to search engines; by adopting such techniques you run a high risk of having your website blacklisted by the search engines.

A few of the ethical techniques adopted by professional SEO service firms are listed below:

1. Domain aspect: These include using domain names which are short and easy to remember, inclusion of short keywords without hyphens, use of .com or .net extensions for international markets, hosting location based on targeted business market / country, URL names including appropriate keywords that are unique to each page in the site.

2. Technical related aspects: Preventing access of your website by robots or crawlers by including robots.txt file, ensuring simple and easy navigation structure, ensuring addition of unique, good meta tags in each page in relevance to the contents in those pages, ensuring compliance of the website to W3C standards.

3. Relating to other aspect points: Giving an accepted privacy policy to the site, filling the website’s contents with SEO copywriting, ensuring excellent keyword visibility and density in the contents of every page.

4. Support service related aspects: Providing and ensuring support services including generating periodic SEO reports (say, every month) that detail the SEO progress, website rank tracking and index tracking, periodical checking on website ranking, rendering the site to popular, well known internet search engines and relevant manifold directory listings, originating blogs and making relevant postings therein, rendering the website to classifieds, writing and submitting relevant articles, generating RSS feeds and submitting them to appropriate directories, writing press releases and submitting them to appropriate agencies.

In order to increase your knowledge on SEO and to help you distinguish between good and bad SEO services, let’s also take a look at the unethical or black hat techniques that are shunned by firms offering professional SEO services. You must take care to ensure that your site doesn’t, intentionally or unintentionally, use these unethical techniques.

Black hat (unethical) SEOs engage in using processes and methods like keyword stuffing, article spinning, link farms, optimizing irrelevant keywords to lure unwary searchers, hidden texts, forwarding to malicious websites, and developing doorway or gateway pages.

SEO firms with no repute or morale engage in these black hat (unethical) SEO techniques with the objective of swindling money from unsuspecting customers and offer much discounted prices that customers find unable to resist. The relevance of the search results by well known search engines will likely be mislead by these black hat techniques and, to prevent that, the algorithms followed by the search engines will identify and ban your site in due course.
